i wouldn't call it sad so much as reflective, and people are reflective at a wedding. when looking foward, its only natural to look back on where you've been. People had lives before they met their significant other, and they may have loved before. There also may be important people who have passed on, but this song is perfect to reflect and look foward. of everything that has happened, that one person trumps all the bad and all the former flames. Basically, "in my life, i've loved you more".
